NACFOR Expands Community Forest Agreement Area

PRESS RELEASE

NACFOR EXPANDS COMMUNITY FOREST AGREEMENT AREA

[January 9, 2026, Nakusp]; The Nakusp and Area Community Forest (NACFOR) is pleased to announce the addition of 3,434 hectares to Community Forest Agreement (CFA) K2S. This amendment increases the total CFA area from 9,192 hectares to 12,626 hectares and was approved in late 2025 by the Regional Executive Director of the Kootenay Boundary Region.

The additional area will help to diversify NACFOR’s landbase and ensure the long-term sustainability of its annual allowable cut of 20,000 cubic metres. The new areas, previously part of Interfor Corporation’s Forest License, include a parcel adjacent to NACFOR’s Wensley Creek operating area and NACFOR’s Woodlot #406, the north face of Box Mountain, and a large area over Allshouse Peak, from the Summit Lake Forest Service Road to Slewiskin Forest Service Road (See attached map).

This area will be managed under NACFOR’s Forest Stewardship Plan, with the same responsible and sustainable management practices that NACFOR employs on its existing land base, for the economic, social, and environmental benefit of the Nakusp and area community.

“Increasing the area of the CFA was essential for the sustainability of our AAC and the long-term viability of the community forest operation. The expansion will give us more flexibility to focus management on long term ecosystem resilience, wildfire risk reduction and balancing the many objectives and values we have on the tenure while continuing to ensure a stable supply of fibre and support for local jobs,” says Mike Crone, General Manager of NACFOR.

NACFOR’s Landbase Expansion Initiative started in 2016, and the community forest has been working on this amendment with the Ministry of Forests since July 2023. Field assessments and operational planning for the new areas by NACFOR’s management contractor, Cabin Resource Management Ltd., will begin this summer. A significant portion of the Allshouse Peak chart was harvested by Slocan Forest Products Ltd. in the late 60’s and early 70’s and presents an opportunity for active management including stand improvement and commercial thinning activities.

Community forest agreements across the province ensure that local land bases are managed for the long-term benefit of their communities and residents. To learn more about community forestry, visit the BC Community Forest Association website: https://www.bccfa.ca/
