The BC Community Forest Association recently published a needs assessment summary of community forests that work to mitigate and become more resilient to wildfire risk.
Community forests are the leading entity in managing diverse values for rural communities, including wildfire risk reduction. The BCCFA represents the community forests on a provincial scale.
The assessment revealed that community forests have invested $10.9 million of their own resources into wildfire-related initiatives over the past decade, and managed additional external funding sources for WRR work.
The BCCFA partnered with the BC Wildfire Service from 2021 to 2024 and provided many community forests with funding from the BCCFA Wildfire Risk Reduction Economic Recovery Initiative which allowed CFA’s to create jobs, stronger partnerships, and opportunities to balance WRR with other land base values.
The attached needs assessment determines objectives and capacities of CFA’s for wildfire planning.
A valuable report showing the impact of WRR, and how community forests can be supported to continue to implement this work!
